New Laptop!
I have just got another laptop! And I have replaced the god-aweful Winshit OS with Linux, Yay!! I have compiled Xscreensaver-4.18 and I am running Xmatrix and Phosphor. Sure beats the hell out of the MS Flag screensaver and OpenGL pipes screensavers. Not that I hate those pipes GL hacks, I prefer the Matrix. The person who had it before me had Windows '98 on it!
What a heap of Bullshit! I am running the Enlightenment Window Manager on my system and I would not swap it for the world. I have the xmatrix screensaver running as my desktop wallpaper and I have managed to get the sound working as well. The sound hardware was not working with OSS, so I had to install Alsa, which has fixed the problem. Overall, I am very happy with the performance of my system, now I can have mobile Linux wherever I go, although the battery has been charging for 24 hours and it only has 26% charge at the moment. But I am new to the world of notebooks, I know one thing, having the home key right next to the backspace key is driving me nuts but I will just have to get used to it. But it is great having all of your hardware autodetected and drivers installed, although I wish that Mandrake would fix their annoying installer. I had to setup video by hand because my flat screen display on the notebook was not detected and configured correctly. I eventually settled on 800x600 @ 16bpp. Last time I dealt with this I had to edit Xfree86 configuration file by hand to configure the video. Not a job for a newbie.
I have been watching some demos of the Punisher done in under 10:00 and I cannot believe the skill these demo runners have. I had to struggle to finish Punisher in 12:29 and they can do it in under 7:00. Still, there is not much difference between my time and that time, if I could at least get 10:00 I would be rapt. Although I will not be recording a maxdemo for some time, I prefer just to get to the exit as fast as possible. I have also downloaded HR2 Final release and I plan on trying a run of MAP29. Although I need to get past the first section before I can plan on doing that, but how hard can it be? The level is huge and there is at least plenty of room to move to dodge fireballs. It is hard, but it has that quality that keeps bringing you back for more gibbage and death. I am very impressed with the quality of the levels in this megawad, except for MAP32 which in my opinion is a heap of shit. Nowhere close to the quality of the other maps. Just cramming every concievable demon in one small space does not make a good or enjoyable. Although Nuts.wad is pretty funny. That is a joke wad I am sure it is still one of the most popular levels I have come across. A good way to test your machine just like those "Crusher" demos for Quake3. A demo recorded on this map would be the ultimate benchmarking tool, and very popular for evaluating the DoomMark2
tm performance rating of your machine. There I have just come up with the name for our Doom benchmark system. I hope I get some credit for this!
Man oh man, what a cool match in the next episode of RAW! Triple H going up against every member of the RAW roster in an over the top battle royale. The title is going to be passed to another lucky contestant. About time too, Triple H has had it for far too long in my book, time for someone else to take the crown and enjoy the feeling that comes with walking down the ramp carrying a title belt around your waist. Hiroko has just attacked Torrie Wilson and then Kenzo Sazuki grabbed her from behind and 'rescued' her, before making advances towards the hapless Torrie. He needs to understand how women are treated in the West. But we have a Big Show Thanksgiving, that is cool I say. A 7FT tall, 500 pound giant makes a great holiday better. Describing how he duct taped up the boyfriend of his sister and sent her off to look for him so he could eat all the food himself. I mean he was a very big tall child and now he is a giant. But then Luther Reigns spoils it all by going on about his prison stay. Then Big Show takes him out of the ring and the people who were invited to the Thanksgiving party have a huge food fight.
Anyway, I hope the title goes to someone else other than Triple H. Even if Randy Orton does not get the title, I hope someone else does, like the 400 pound viscera. Or Maven. Anyone else other than Evolution.
I am just watching the Biography channel on Digital satellite, and there is a biog of Bill Gates, 'Microsoft, we take a hard line on software!' If only they took a hard line on bugs, then more people might use it. Instead we have service packs that take up a 400mb space on a CD and that Service pack 2 still introduces more bugs that maybe will be fixed in Service pack 3. At least Linux does not need such enormous patches, I would rather run it than Windows XP. I have had a lot of problems with Windows, installing it requires you have all of your driver CD's ready to install the driver software. With Linux, every thing is autodetected, and you may need to tweak a couple of settings but everything else is taken care of and you only need to have your Linux installation CD's ready and you are set. Why cannot Windows include more drivers for various software, so that you can just install and have more hardware setup automatically instead of going through the process again? Although, you could do it once and then burn a Ghost image to a CD or DVD and then you can just restore that when needed.
I have made a new level for Boom using the Yadex level editor. This level is a tribute to the famous nuts.wad, and it has 1249 monsters in UV... Most of them in one area. But it is more playable because it gives you somewhere to retreat to. And it is more like a real level, not just a large area full of monster, although it has that, it runs better on lower specced machines. And it is fun too.
